These books will be read by students in my AVID class. My school's demographics are mostly white and Hispanic. The school also has some students who are high SES and some who very low SES. While this may be diverse, there are many other stories that these kids are not aware of. Due to social media, it is has become easy for kids to not learn how to empathize with others. I try to teach my students about empathy for others and learn about different cultures and acceptance. Reading gives students a chance to visit many different stories through their eyes and minds. My proposed book collection includes books that are diverse and inclusive of race, gender, abilities, and lifestyles. A few of the books also speak about success and overcoming. Some of my students are ESL learners and so I have included graphic novels that may help them as well as appeal to others.
