Having a device for every student in my class on a daily basis will allow me to integrate new learning platforms into my on-site instruction and create a basis for a smooth transition to distance learning if the COVID-19 pandemic mandates it again. Currently, my district has a 1:4 or 1:5 student-to-device ratio when instruction is happening on site. Devices are shared between several different classrooms, and their consistent use for my 7th grade Medieval Studies classes is not possible. Without a device for every student, I have to use textbooks, printed workbooks, and worksheets for most of the independent practice and extension activities. These materials are less engaging and far less interactive than the activities I can design for my students using online learning platforms such as Edpuzzle, Nearpod, PearDeck, Padlet, and Flipgrid. My students and I mastered these platforms while we were engaged in distance learning last spring and found them very effective. Students loved lessons in Edpuzzle where they watched video presentations, answered embedded questions, and received immediate feedback on their comprehension, They also liked Nearpod and PearDeck practice activities where they matched terms and definitions, labeled diagrams and maps, took class polls, and created collaborative boards. They enjoyed working on group projects through Flipgrid and Padlet. Continuing to use these tools in the classroom will allow me to integrate more audiovisual resources, make assignments more student-paced, and provide more immediate and targeted feedback to students. It will also help me prepare my students for a seamless transition to distance learning if we are required to make one again in the future.
