Middle school classrooms are the perfect place to engage students in the concepts of inclusivity, equity, and diversity, and highly-engaging books are the perfect way to start their thinking. I received my MA Ed. in Reading and Literacy in December 2018. I fully believe in the potential of a good book to inspire critical thinking about topics that can prove difficult to address. Curating a classroom library of books that inspire and challenge my students is one of my big priorities. As time goes on, the world is becoming more colorful and diverse. Students need to be able to see themselves reflected in quality literature. Just as importantly, diversity needs to go both ways. Students should also be able to look through windows or step through a sliding glass door into other worlds. Helping me add these award-winning books to my classroom library will assist students to see these reflections and other worlds as well as challenge their thinking for years to come.
