As an English teacher, I understand how important it is to have students find creative outlets to express themselves. Our school is highly academic and we begin preparing our students for high school in the sixth grade. However, in wanting to develop the whole child, we also strive to provide the spaces to ensure social emotional development. As I work with one of the counselors this summer, I would like our young scholars to use literature as a lens in which they are able to see the world.
The materials selected are appropriate for the grade level we are serving. The 4-in-1 pens will be used to teach students how to annotate texts. The books are reflective of important historical periods we feel children of color should know about. The bookmarks are their page holders. The journals will be used for the students to write and creatively express how they feel. The dry erase board will become a place to chart ideas during distance learning sessions.
At a school predominantly serving children of color, we strive to ensure our scholars are well read, well balanced and well prepared for the world they will face.
