The students in my class are a diverse group with special needs. Too often, they don’t see themselves represented in books. Our classroom is severely lacking in literature that represents all students of differing abilities and backgrounds. My students deserve to see people like them in the books they read. Not only for themselves but to be able to share with others. The classroom library should be a mirror in which students can see themselves and a window into other students’ lives. By adding these books, a whole world will be opened to them. Therefore, encouraging literacy skills by providing high interest material.
