There is no question about the fact that multicultural literature in the classroom is a necessity. The majority of the literature that I currently have in my classroom has been passed on to me from other teachers, which means that some of it are very outdated. I have a classroom full of diverse learners and the literature that they read and hear needs to reflect that. Even though I teach fourth grade, the students still thoroughly enjoy spending time together as a community and listening to me read the new stories. I don't want to have multicultural stories saved for specific holidays or celebrations (Chinese New Year, Black History Month, etc.), I want them to become the backbone of my teaching. Whether we are learning together in the classroom or connecting virtually next year, these inspirational stories will be shared with the attentive ears of my students all year long.
