“Windows and mirrors” is a literacy concept based on the idea that books with windows offer a view into reality, not just imaginary worlds while books that reflect a reader's own life are mirrors. Educators have continued to build on this idea, which now includes “Sliding Glass Doors” as an opportunity for students to step out of their own lives and become part of another world. Exposure to diverse, multicultural literature can bridge connections between home life, community, and the classroom. My text-to-world connection stems from racial injustice not only in the United States but across the world. I found myself making text-to-text and text-to-self connections to the books that can be found on the shelves in my classroom. My favorite books are featured, including award-winners, bestsellers, and classics. There are also many hand-me-down books that are outdated and don’t accurately represent my students. When evaluating the quality of books featuring people of color found in my classroom, there seems to be a common theme; slavery, hardships, and overcoming challenges. Famous children’s author, Eric Velasquez, explains, “Once children see themselves represented in books, their existence is validated and they feel that they are part of the world.” Diversity is deeper than the color of our skin. Reading about characters who are differently-abled, have different family dynamics, and come from different cultures helps build a community of learners that are supportive, empathetic, and accepting of others.
