I want to use Dreamland Burning to teach about racism, violence against the black community, and how we can stand up for equality for all. This story is doubly important because it teaches about the Tulsa Race Riot/Massacre of 1921 in Oklahoma. Many Oklahoma students know either nothing or very little about this event in our state's history, and they need to know about it to help prevent future events like this from happening. It is important that we learn to love and support each other no matter the color of our skin, so I want to have classroom discussions about race relations in our state and nation today. We will make connections between current events and the Tulsa Race Riot/Massacre. Students will also read and view primary source documents about the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot/Massacre to learn more about our state's history. As a culminating activity, students will write an essay detailing what they have learned and offer solutions to help end racism and prejudice in our society today.
