This class of thoughtful, hard working students love to listen to books read aloud. They hang on every word and enjoy the illustrations. As much as they enjoy listening to the book, they LOVE to talk about the book. Discussions reinforce comprehension skills and vocabulary. Since they are students with various speech and language disabilities, having class conversations is key to their progress! Through literature and conversations, they work on goals from their individualized education plans while learning about interesting subjects and content areas. For this project I want to expand our class library to include more multi- cultural books that depict diversity and reflect the many colors and cultures of our class. I plan to use these books to foster comprehension and conversation skills; I also want them to act as a conversation starter for ideas like inclusion, diversity, empathy and justice, concepts that might be abstract and difficult for some students to understand. My students learn best with concrete, real-life examples- the books I chose will provide just that. By providing these books to my class, you will be helping to educate my students with disabilities about how to question, understand, empathize, and accept people not exactly like them. You will give them an opportunity to share experiences and learn more about themselves and each other. Finally, you will be giving these very deserving children the same chance as their peers in general education classes to learn more about diversity.
