The concept of a "fraction" is abstract, and visualizing part vs. whole is a developmental skill not fully in place for some kids until middle or high school. The purpose of this project is to explore the effects of using manipulatives as a visual representation presenting opportunities for constructing mathematical knowledge. Students will build fractions, draw fractions, and write fractions using concrete tangible models. Manipulatives can help the complex concepts become more concrete. Using manipulatives teaches students how they can represent abstract concepts in a more visual way and the hand-on experience helps cognitive abilities develop. Modeling using visual tools provides an image to go with the concept I'm teaching. Providing visual components and free exploration with manipulatives help students become ready to learn a particularly challenging concept.
