The school I work at has a strong recorder program in elementary school. When they reach middle school, they lose that opportunity to learn a new instrument and, for many of them, recorders are not enough to kick start a love for the arts. Ukuleles are "trendy", but they are more than that. They are fun and challenging. They increase hand and eye coordination and create an ear for tune. I want to give them more than a ukulele program, I want to give them a love of music that will last a lifetime. This ukulele program will open many doors into both instrumental and vocal mastery. I'm hoping this will change the way some of my students view music.
