Each year, the Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program releases 15 books for grades 3-5 that have wide appeal to all readers through varied genres and topics. Our school has created various incentives to encourage students to read these books and cultivate the enjoyment of reading for pleasure. My students set goals and look forward to participating in this program each year through reading the books, taking quizzes, and receiving rewards. The year culminates with a field trip and party for reading the SSYRA books and recognition for how many books the students completed. With so many students desiring to read the books, there is a shortage of books and many families are unable to purchase them on their own. My hope is to obtain a class set of these selected books so all of my students will have an opportunity to reach their goal and continue the journey to become life-long readers.
