As Tara Smith writes on We Are Teachers, "Books about social justice allow our students insight into what it feels like to be a refugee, to encounter racism, or to have to fight against great odds for rights and freedoms which others take for granted." By donating to this project, you will give my students the opportunity to broaden their worldviews and to learn about people, places, and time periods, like the Holocaust and apartheid in South Africa, that they otherwise might not yet be aware of. We will use these texts to critically think through Socratic Seminars, small group discussions, and writing workshops. The beauty of books is that students don't have to travel far to learn about others. Many of us are currently stuck at home, and I think ensuring that students are still reading and learning about other cultures and time periods is essential to ensure we stay empathetic and open-minded.
