Responsive Classroom is a research-based approach to teaching that is used in classrooms across the nation. Schools that implement Responsive classroom methods experience increased engagement, fewer discipline problems, higher teaching quality, and a better school community. The core belief of Responsive Classroom is, “In order to be successful in and out of school, students need to learn a set of social and emotional competencies—cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control—and a set of academic competencies—academic mindset, perseverance, learning strategies, and academic behaviors.” ("Principles & Practices" 2020) This core belief is addressed through the four key domains: engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmentally responsive teaching. In my teaching experience thus far, I have found that social-emotional skills and needs are just as important and academics. I have personally noticed that as the rigor and academic expectations have continuously increased over the past several years, the social-emotional competencies of our students have declined. This results in students that have difficulty getting along with peers, dealing with challenges, and solving day-to-day problems. Social-emotional learning and support are especially important for students of trauma. As an educator, I see more and more students dealing with trauma each year. A classroom environment that fully supports the social-emotional needs of students is essential for both academic success and overall well-being. I truly believe that the Responsive Classroom training will help me to create the most welcoming, supportive, and effective classroom environment for all of my students.
