Flexible seating allows my students to make independent choices that benefit their learning. It allows students the opportunity to take charge of their learning and make choices that are the best for them. During independent work time, my students have several work options. We currently have two therapy balls and two-scoop seats. Children are able to use these, as well as work in other areas around our classroom (under tables, in our classroom library, at tables with regular chairs.) My students are more engaged with their learning when they have been given the choice of where to work. The wobble stools and the wobble cushions that I have included in my project will provide students with the subtle movements that will help increase their focus and engagement. They will help my young students get their wiggles out, without distracting their friends around them. The flex chairs will provide them with a comfy spot to sit in while doing their independent work. These items will also be able to be cleaned and sanitized easily, which is something that we have to be very aware of when school begins in the fall. As I prepare to come back into my classroom after being gone for so many months due to the pandemic, I want to make sure that my classroom is a place where learning can happen for all of my students, regardless of their learning style. I want to make sure that the social-emotional needs of my students are met, and that they feel safe and comfortable in our classroom. I feel that providing them with more flexible seating options will help achieve this.
