Elementary students may be little, but their feelings can be big. Learning to manage these big feelings in a way that is safe and socially appropriate can be a challenge, especially for students who have experienced traumas, transition for our military families. As their school counselor, I have been working with my students to help them name their feelings, which can make uncomfortable feelings feel less scary. We have also worked on noticing our feelings and our reactions before they become out of control. Because feelings are neither good nor bad—they are just a normal part of being human! With that in mind, we continue our work to include managing those feelings in a way that is helpful rather than harmful. I want my students to understand that feelings do not control them...they have some control over their feelings and behavior. That is where a calm corner comes in! This corner will contain bean bags, a carpet that is calming, stress balls, , and sensory lamps to help students remember and practice the coping skills that they are learning during classroom guidance lessons and small group counseling.
