With these lab coats, students will be able to embrace their role as scientists. For context, the school these students attend require a uniform. Therefore, students are constantly looking for opportunities to stand out and be different amongst the sea of students all wearing the same thing. I currently have 2 lab coats and the students are always jostling for who gets to wear them. I even had to make a schedule for each class so that the students felt it was a fair distribution of the lab coats. I feel my goal as a middle school science teacher is to generate curiosity and excitement around STEM so students feel empowered to pursue careers in STEM as they progress through their academic career. A perfect way to do this is for students to envision themselves as scientists when they are in the class. Lab coats serve 2 purposes in the classroom. In a practical sense, their purpose is to help students stay safe as we explore a variety of fun experiments. However, in a more visionary sense, they get students excited to participate in class. They help transform the classroom into this scientific lab where students are escaping the mundane and entering a world where they get to discover and imagine. I believe students are more willing to learn and participate in academics if they are in an environment that encourages them to see themselves as scientists. My hope is to give them this opportunity with the lab coats.
