Sensory play is beneficial for all children, but it is especially important for students with special needs. Sensory activities can help to calm them, support their language development, and encourage social learning skills. The children in my special needs preschool class look forward to sensory play. It is a highly motivating activity to them so we are able to work on cognitive, language and social skills without them even realizing that they are learning! The large sand and water tables and activity tubs requested encourage social interaction and language skills because they allow multiple children to play with the sensory materials at the same time. The tools such as the rolling pins and playdough scissors will help to strengthen a child’s fine motor skills. The sensory materials such as the sand, water beads, bubbles, and foam paints will enhance this fun way of learning and encourage individual development.
