My students live in a low-income war-zone, the toughest neighborhood in Jacksonville, FL. Two of my students were murdered this year, one very recently. We lost a daughter and then a son. I miss their infectious smiles, their youthful energy, their kind and playful spirits. Some days, we teach and learn through tears. A few students have dropped out or moved away. The rest are trying as hard as they can to succeed in a virtual learning environment in a world that has been turned up-side-down by the Covid-19 pandemic. My kids love to sing and dance to help them learn geometry. Classroom visitors can't believe that I get these tough kids (all of them) up on their feet singing and dancing to our original geometry raps. We have a ball! My kids are very compassionate, because they know struggle. I want them to know they matter, that someone cares about them. I give all I can, but we still have needs.
