Each morning my students arrive to the routine of our greeting at the door, unpacking their backpack, and then socializing with their classmates. This time in the morning allows my kindergarteners a fresh start to the day as well as time to say hello to friends before planned curriculum learning takes place. These hands-on manipulatives will allow students to think it's morning toy time, but they offer so much more. For example, magnetic manipulatives such as MagnaTiles and Magnetic Building Sets allow math standards based conversations focused on 2D and 3D shapes, as well as science exploration with magnetism. Other items, such as alphabet beads, AlphaBots, and dough stampers allow hands on ELA standards based learning with getting letters in front of students. These items would allow students to practice letter recognition, sound recall, as well as be used to build sight words in word work or vocabulary centers. Manipulative toys allow students to learn many different life skills. Getting unscripted time with classmates and educational toys allow kids to practice communication, problem solving, compromise, conflict resolution, and sharing. Morning toy time only involves tangible items, allowing for the important support of fine motor development with grasping and pinching items as well as gross motor skills.
