My tech-savvy first graders complete many assignments and assessments on their laptops. Videos, interactive games, and read-aloud stories are just a few of the countless virtual tools my students use to support their learning. However, when you multiply a few sight word videos and virtual math games by 22 laptops, all you get is a lot of noise and chaos and minimal learning. A classroom set of high quality headphones could completely rewrite the equation. Quality headphones would quite literally enhance the learning of every student for every subject. No matter how advanced or challenged a student in my classroom is, the ability to hear their virtual activities in a distraction free environment would ensure that their learning would increase. Most of my students are English Language Learners, and therefore require lots of additional visual and auditory supports in order to complete their work. If they were able to effectively hear stories and directions for virtual tasks, their English proficiency and academic achievement would benefit tremendously.
