This year I taught art and technology for our K-5 elementary school. Next year we are going to combine the two classes and create a STEAM based classroom. This will also include sixth grade next year. We know the addition of the STEAM program will enhance our students learning. Currently our area is decreasing in population due to our students moving away to find jobs. We want to create an environment that teaches our students about other career opportunities in their future that could lead them back to create jobs in our communities. The life skills, problem solving skills, and lessons they learn will help them excel in the future. The need for access to enhanced learning in our area is so important. Our students have little to no access right now to enhanced learning due to cost of equipment and budget cuts. The smallest schools suffer the most when budgets are cut. The implementation of STEAM will bring the 4 c's of engineering into the classroom, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, communication. All of these skills are a need right now in our youth.
