As a fifth grade Math and Science teacher, I'm aware that research tells us that many girls begin losing interest in STEM around middle and high school. Additionally, with minorities often being underrepresented in STEM, the odds of my students continuing their education in Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology are statistically slimmer, but I am dedicated to changing that. I will use the coding robot and Amazon Fire tablet to introduce students to block-based coding in a Robotics Club for grades 3-5. I will also use these items, along with the book, to start a Girls Who Code club for grades 3-5. The clubs will be open to students of all genders; however, the Girls Who Code Club is geared to female students and students who identify as female and want to support the interests of Girls/Women in Computer Science. I believe these clubs will support the interest of our students in computer science and STEM education. The elementary school where I teach is a feeder school for a Middle School with an Underwater Robotics Club. I would like the students from our campus to be familiar with introductory coding and robotics before they advance to middle school in the hopes they will continue their education in computer science as a career or hobby. I relate to my students as a minority woman, as a former student raised in the same community, and a first-generation college graduate that defied the same statistics, these students are facing. Please, help me spark their interest in STEM and build them up confidence and skills as they continue their education.
