With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of themes to support and validate their feelings. Often children with mental health conditions can feel alone and like no one else has similar struggles. Offering books to children about mental health topics can prompt amazing conversations and make a world of difference! As a School Based Clinician, I provide one on one hour long sessions to children on a weekly basis. I work with classroom teachers and school counselors to identify students that may be experiencing mental health symptoms. After a referral is placed, I complete a formal mental health assessment, and with parents, collaboratively create an individualized treatment plan with goals that support the mental health needs of the child. Over the course of treatment I include a variety of interventions to include Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Theraplay and many more. With TeleHealth now as my main and only form af sessions, I have increased my use of Bibliotherapy, which is where this idea to ask for support came from. Reading and discussing themes of books is a simple way to not only engage children over this difficult time of virtual therapy and also sparks amazing conversations.
