Currently, my students sit in plastic chairs at tables with two or more of their peers. Unfortunately, the chairs allow students to tilt or pop back which is a safety hazard and something that I address regularly with my more fidgety, energetic students. After addressing the chair issue with these students daily, I shifted to a "one and done" rule. Students who tilt back in the chair lose access to the seat immediately and transition to spot on the carpet for remainder of the class period with the opportunity to try again to maintain appropriate chair behavior the next day. My sixth graders are the definition of energy. Having the flexible seating options like the lap desk and floor seat will allow students who need to move and fidget the opportunity to do so. When the traditional table and chair are uncomfortable or restricting, these options will encourage students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. There is no better way to show my support for a student-centered classroom, than creating the classroom from my student's point of view. Additionally, the lamps will provide some different classroom lighting options outside of the current florescent bulbs that light our room. Research in the use of light in schools has shown that white fluorescent bulbs cause: bodily stress, anxiety, hyper-activity, attention problems, and other distress leading to poor learning performance. Whether or not this is true, I do think having the opportunity to provide a softer light at times will positively impact my students' academic performance.
