Sitting in a typical chair and desk is not the best way to learn for most children. By providing alternative seating to my students, it will allow them to wobble, rock, bounce, and move their bodies as many children do. By allowing children to make choices regarding their seating, it is helping them to develop their self regulation skills and understand how they learn best. Some children need to be wiggling and moving, while others need a privacy shield and headphones. Students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work. All of the wiggling, wobbling, rocking and bouncing actually increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. The clip boards, bean bag chairs, and portable lab desks allow for comfortable alternative floor seating. The wobble stools are helpful for students that need movement. The noise canceling headphones are for students that are easily distracted by things around them. And, the classroom set of headphones would provide every student with a pair of headphones so that they can do work on their chromebooks without the sound bothering other students around them. I have seen how flexible seating creates an inclusive environment for all. It is a place where all students feel comfortable to learn, grow and become the best versions of themselves.
