My students need to develop their social emotional and behavior skills as well as their academic skills. The isolation of distance learning has caused them to struggle when interacting with peers. If they are learning through games and small group activities, it gives them the opportunity to practice their academic and social skills all that the same time. While we will be developing their academic skills, they will also be learning how to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish/maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions across diverse cultural contexts. For example, while we are playing games such as Tower of Math games or Dino Math Tracks game, we will be practicing math skills while addressing behavioral skills during game play. They will also benefit from games such as "Don't Go Bananas" or "No Waries STORM" that directly teach social emotional skills during game play. I have also noticed that distance learning has had a negative impact on my students in that they need to rebuild interest and stamina in the area of reading. I have chosen high interest books such as Captain Underpants and the Last Kids on Earth that we can read and discuss together as a group. Academic standards that will be addressed include but are not limited to: 1.OA.B.3 Apply properties of operations to add and subtract. RF.2.3 Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis skils in decoding words RL.3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
