Middle school learners are just that--in the middle. Too old for recess, but too young for total independence. I would like to meet their needs in a way that is geared specifically to their age. They need to be social and engaged, but also have structure, and the best way to do that is small chunks of time in small groups. I have seen my students shine when they have opportunities to discuss, teach each other, and work together. I would like to divide my classroom into stations. They need direct instruction, practice, social interaction, and time to process. The seating that I have selected will allow the students different group options that they can rotate through. The different seating options will reflect what goes on in the station--everything from group discussions on the floor to computer work/independent practice at the tall tables. I can make the class a place of collaboration, critical thinking and team building.
