To establish strong relationships and create a sense of belonging for all students, my first graders continuously explore their identities and the ways our diverse identities come together to form an inclusive and caring community. One powerful way we engage in this work is through read alouds. The power of a book is found in its ability to share stories that students see themselves in as well as stories in which students learn to see the experiences of others.
Your support of this project will provide books for students to hear more stories that reflect their own lives and address critical social/emotional skills.
The diversity in the books included feature important people, events, and stories that will be integrated across all subject areas and will contribute to community building in our classroom. As all students in my class see the diverse representation of persistence and positive relationships in these books, they will be able to celebrate people in their lives and dream how they will be the next generation of leaders and change-makers.
