My desire is to make science very relevant and observable to my students. I am aware that most of my students have spent time near a water environment but don't really think how the various species interact. These interactions are necessary for the maintenance of our water environments. With this project, my students will have the opportunity to experience aquaponics in their classroom environments. By making observations of the classroom system, they will see for themselves how nature interacts in the real world. Aquaponics teachers ecological concepts involving a system that leverages both fish farming and vegetable growing. The excrement from the fish is transformed into nitrate by bacteria and then used as fertilizer for the plants. The plants act as filters to clean the water for the fish. It is a true ecology cycle. This will help them understand the cycles while developing an appreciation for science in their own lives.
