Using collaborative literature circles, students will read A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park which is based on a true story about perseverance amid adversity while learning about the vast differences in experiences of children outside of the United States. Not only will students grasp the positive message about conquering obstacles, but they will also learn about the civil war in Sudan. A Long Walk to Water provides great cross-curricular connections to social studies, current events, and science. The accompanying lessons will challenge students' reading comprehension skills and engage them in higher-order thinking skills such as character inferences and analysis, symbolism, and writing.
