When students walk into our music room, one of the first things they see are brand-new keyboards lined up on the outer walls, ready and waiting to be played. On top of each one is a binder I have put together with different exercises and articles we work through so 5th- 8th grade students are able to learn how to play keyboards after a 4 week unit. Because I collected the exercises and articles from different sources and using them in a class environment, they are mostly geared towards young kids taking private lessons, which is often met with “Mr.B, this is so lame! Do you think I’m a baby? It looks too easy!!”. I am requesting a donation of 15 Alfred’s Piano Basics for Late Beginners books as our go-to keyboard resource because it has the material and information necessary to play but framed in a more mature, older student-friendly way. These books will motivate them to play, and have already started to encourage students to form their own groups to perform for our weekly school assembly (even if it is Mary Had a Little Lamb, with a cooler name, of course).
