Here at our school, we try to get the most out of our technology time. We use technology with purpose, and oftentimes students are unable to benefit fully from their devices due to the quality and size of earbuds. Believe it or not, earbuds don't fit comfortably into my sweet 1st grader's ears, and oftentimes break easily. Students who can listen well, can learn well! While attempting to teach children how to listen to a lesson taught whole group by a teacher, it is also important that students know how to listen well with technology. With proper headphones, students will be able to use their devices effectively, and won't have to worry about the discomfort and unreliability of their current earbuds. We use our chromebooks to hold students accountable during stations. I try to incorporate as many fun math and reading games online during stations, and headphones are essential to learning from these online programs. In addition to listening to our district-wide math and reading programs, headphones allow students to focus on their own work and keeps distractions to a minimum. Headphones also keep the noise level in the classroom at a dull roar, so that small group instruction can be improved. It is far easier to teach mini-lessons to groups of children when the other students can be busily working at a noise level that allows a learning environment to be fruitful. My goal is to teach my students to listen so that they will be enabled to learn!
