When students work with virtual manipulatives, there’s a sense of heightened anticipation, engagement and even a little bit of magic in the room. Many of today’s classrooms are filled with technology, but one piece that can help me as a teacher and my students bring new life to a lesson is the interactive whiteboard and the teaching manipulatives that it makes possible. An interactive whiteboard has the ability to enhance curriculum, increase student achievement and allow learning activities not imaginable in a traditional classroom environment. As an interactive whiteboard allows multiple users or input devices to interact with the board simultaneously, lessons, labs and projects can be developed to take advantage of this capability. The whiteboard can enhance lectures when teachers use them to check students’ understanding. For instance, after a five-minute lecture, I can easily create three slides to check for basic understanding. Students who usually stay quiet or do not speak up, would comfortably participate in such an activity. The interactive whiteboard would help students focus more during lessons, which comes from the attractiveness and visual conceptualization of the interactive whiteboard. Also, “it does not matter if you make a mistake on the interactive whiteboard because you can just undo it.” demonstrates willingness of students to take risks in their learning knowing that errors can easily be erased with the interactive whiteboard which is a huge component in enhancing self confidence amongst students. This interactive piece of technology makes learning much more student-centered. It’s not about replacing the conventional tools I currently use in their daily instruction, but rather adding a new dimension of engagement.
