It is my goal through this project to help include more artists of color in our musical library, specifically icons in jazz, soul, classical, opera, salsa, motown, dance and hip hop. These books will be used both in person and online as resources to support our musicians throughout the year. Students will learn about these artists through reading, group projects, and performances (both in person and virtual). Student musicians deserve to have musical role models that look and sound like them. I have an incredible group of musicians. These musicians have a large range in reading levels, everywhere from beginning English Language learners to English-proficient A.P. students. All of these students are bright and eager to learn. I have chosen a wide span of books to cover different reading levels, backgrounds, and styles of music. I wish to use these materials to help expand our students' idea of what a musical icon looks and sounds like.
