These books will be used to start a social justice book club with middle school students. I am the reading interventionist at my school. Our town is a small, rural town in northwest Wisconsin. I am passionate about social justice and reading, so this is the perfect project for me. I feel that by meeting with small groups of students who are interested in the topic/issue of the book, I will be able to facilitate discussions among the students in the book club group. It is my hope that the students will then carry over what they learned and discussed in their classrooms, homes, and communities.
With all that is currently happening in our country and world, I feel this project is much needed. Students need a safe space to discuss and share their ideas, thoughts, and feelings about these social justice issues.
These books could be used for in-person learning or distance learning. Either way, students will have a copy of the book to read. We will meet either in person or virtually to discuss as we read. I hope to use these books year after year with different groups of kids and to build upon the collection as I go.
