Our low-income school district consists of over 20% English Language Learner (ELL) students. Those entering the district during the high school years must pass the required state graduation courses, taught by English speaking teachers, in order to graduate. While their language acquisition is quite remarkable, they often fall behind in the first year setting them back for graduation. There are so many language barriers to learning content related subjects like physics and algebra, participating in assemblies and daily communications, that the ELLs often become discouraged and the drop out rate is higher. These translators will give them access to learning and remove barriers!
