I have wanted to do something more with my REC kids in the allotted 25 minute time period. I would like to gather some simple hand tools like screwdrivers, hammers, hand saws, etc. and teach the students how to build simple things like birdhouses. My plan is to use this to get kids to do things with their hands and find pride and a sense of accomplishment in making something. Over the course of the past year, I have compiled different sets of plans for birdhouses and even dog houses. My goal is to have the kids build, paint, and show their work with the end result being a sale, like an auction, of their work and the proceeds would go towards an animal shelter. For the lumber resources, I plan on reaching out to the construction companies in the area (we are in a big construction boom) for their scrap lumber materials. That would leave just the tools and paint materials for the projects.
