As shown in the picture, my classroom is still under construction but I've been assured that it will be ready to go when the students arrive. Once complete, this fifth-grade classroom needs flexible spaces! Students this age need to get up and move around. They are more engaged when learning is hands-on and active. Students this age love to have the opportunity to spread out and have their own space during independent learning. The addition of tablets and alternative seating to the classroom supports the development level and different learning styles of fifth graders. The portability of the tablets and flexible seating (floor chairs and stools) will allow all students to cycle through each part of the lesson at their own pace while allowing them the freedom to choose their own quiet space to work. Having tablets will allow me to provide additional related content to support a deeper understanding in an alternate format. It will also provide students with the opportunity to explore related content that aligns with their interests. Flexible space is especially important now for social distancing. Having tablets and portable floor chairs allow students to safely get away from their desks to create quieter learning spaces or offer opportunities for small group work. Plastic bins allow students to safely transport their belongings. The tablets, stools and floor chairs also support students with special needs.
