When students pick up books, I want them to be able to see themselves in the stories. Culturally diverse texts are an essential part of my daily teaching needs. Studies have shown that when students can see themselves in books, particularly overcoming challenges, this increases reading engagement. I truly believe stories about real life characters reflecting the social demographics of my students will help them relate. The main character of our book is Jaden Toussaint, a five year-old who knows it all: animals, debating, ninja dancing, and the list goes on! Circumnavigating his kindergarten life, he is trying to convince adults that they need more screen time and he's dedicated his life's work to do so. Many of my students already enjoy an occasional picture book, but quickly lose interest. Toussaint's experiences are ones my students can relate to and that will make this text even more engaging that they won't want to put it down.
