While all the students live in the same community and attend the same schools, they experience the world differently. Institutional racism exists and Austin ISD is striving to create schools where all students can be successful, no matter their zip code or their parents' tax returns. Not only are teachers doing anti-racist work but we have an opportunity to educate students to be anti-racist themselves. Our Fifth Graders are primed for this work as the affluent students have grown up with non-affluent. They are friends and take racism personally. With the books and resource guide, the teachers have a unique opportunity to guide students before they enter middle to make changes in their schools and communities to support their friends.
