My students in special education reading classes often need a spark to pique their interest in reading. Education is changing every single day, and so are the interests of my students. Students in my special education classroom like to read stories that are interesting and engaging. My students with intellectual disabilities are largely visual learners. My school media center doesn’t have a large collection of graphic novel books that peak the specific interest of my students, so I would like to have interesting and relevant graphic novels and books to hold their interest and keep them excited about reading in my classroom.
My special education students that struggle with reading will often pick up graphic novel books because the pictures and visuals are less intimidating than a typical book.
Students who read these graphic novels find reading fun and begin to read more for enjoyment! Helping students begin to learn that reading is fun is a perfect way to build better readers. Graphic novel books are a gateway to better reading skills for reluctant readers. My students will love getting their hands on these books.
