My students live and learn in a small, remote, fly-in village in Southcentral Alaska. Our Title I school serves a close-knit Sugpiaq community where cultural identity, cooperation, and connection to place are important parts of students’ lives. Our students are creative, capable, and eager for meaningful challenges. They thrive when learning is social, purposeful, and connected to a shared goal. Because our village is accessible primarily by air, obtaining books and educational materials can be costly and difficult. Students have limited access to bookstores, public libraries, and enrichment opportunities. Battle of the Books will give students an exciting reason to read widely, discuss literature, strengthen comprehension, and work as a team. It will help them see themselves as successful readers, leaders, and proud representatives of their school and community.
