The cornerstone of our honor's class this year is analyzing rhetoric. So far, students have been introduced to the rhetorical triangle, rhetorical risks, and the fundamentals of ethos, pathos, and logos. Now students are ready to use what they know about rhetoric and apply it to a larger text. The book "Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption" will help my students see rhetorical effects in action while they are engaged in a topic that is important to them. High school students are passionate about justice, and justice is not only a global issue to my students but a local one. As inner city students from the Trenton area, the issue of justice is something that these students must deal with on a daily basis. By giving students materials that they are interested in, they will be able to connect with the subject matter and better understand the intended audience. As a class, we want to study the ethos, pathos, and logos of justice reform. Specifically, we will look at how the author builds ethos, pathos, and logos in his book and then analyze whether it was effective in persuading readers.
