This project will help me, a first-year teacher, start building a library for my students. I want to buy books that are culturally representative of my student population, that talk about race and diversity and that show students the experience of others. In grad school, we talked a lot about having books that act as "windows and mirrors" for children of all backgrounds. My class this year will be full of 2nd graders from all parts of the city of Chicago. My school is a magnet school that admits students based on a lottery system and serves the immediate neighborhood and beyond.
