Students live in a world of visual stimulation. I desperately want all of my students to align themselves to books and reading. I am developing a Comics Club to help facilitate reluctant readers. I have chosen a variety of books, both award-winning and popular, to create connections for students at this critical time of academic development. I am looking for ways that students can self-identify as readers. Graphic novels have proven to be one part of this process for some readers. A graphic novel area within my classroom library could become a beacon of student interest. I will couple these texts with an element of art instruction and experimentation, as well. A Comics Club that allows readers to connect life, to books, to art. Once students see themselves as readers, they can become more active in reading other types of books and texts.
