Math Manipulatives help make abstract ideas concrete. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but does it really help students understand how to combine like terms (ex. 3x - 9 - 5x +4? Manipulatives give students ways to construct physical models of abstract mathematical ideas.
"Math Manipulatives lift math off textbook pages." I understand that students need to become comfortable and proficient in math which requires practicing skills from worksheets however, rote practice is not enough. Manipulatives help students develop a deeper understanding of how and why mathematical rules and concepts are what they are. "Seeing is believing," and manipulatives give students physical evidence of how math works.
Math Manipulatives build students' confidence by giving them a way to test and confirm their reasoning. They make learning interesting and enjoyable, increase motivation to learn and provide students with a tool to search for solutions (critical thinking) and solve problems.
One goal of the National Council for the Teachers of Mathematics Standards and the Common Core Standards is to model mathematical concepts. Manipulative offer teachers a way to do this.
