These materials will allow students to customize and create their own ukulele. In previous small scale versions of this project, I saw students do amazing things like: create authentic hawaiian tribal designs with a woodburner on the front of the uku, or paint the uku in the same design as the flag of the Marshall Islands. Marginalized students will take pride in their culture with custom artwork and a musical legacy that they can carry on with them after graduation. Having a custom ukulele that they can carry with them the rest of their lives if they wanted to can have a lasting effect on the students.
