I teach art at a public charter school. Our students are amazing but a lot of our campus is outdated and in poor shape. Middle school lockers are rusty and chipped. My amazing middle schoolers (Ka'apeha academy) came up with a plan to change this. Inspired by the muralists in Kaka'ako students proposed transforming an unsightly part of our campus to a beautiful original artwork. Earlier in the year we looked at muralist Jason Naylor. Naylor uses bright graphic fonts and his murals contain phrases with a positive message. Students wanted the locker mural to be similar but instead using our Hawaiian values. The exterior of the lockers will contain the Hawaiian values an example would be the word Pono meaning to be righteous. The inside of the lockers will contain personalized inspirational quotes to serve as an uplifting reminder for students throughout the school day. The newly painted lockers will provide an added aesthetic to our building with an original piece of art. The mural will also serve as a reminder of our core values. Thank you for your support.
