My students have experienced reading from textbooks that don't showcase heroes that look or talk like them, telling stories that don't excite them. Right now, the books in our classroom come from library give-aways and thrift stores, and they are displayed on stacks of empty milk crates (in school colors, at least). This library would change how they think of reading, creating a lifetime of reading for some who thought they would never enjoy the pastime. If you can send us one book at a time, know that book will barely make it out of the box before a student is turning its pages and finding someone within just like them. The shelves will transform our classroom from one built on found furniture into a place where reading and books are attractive and interesting. Thank you.
